Widowed after only a year of marriage, Kate Marley had a problem getting her crops to market. But that wasn't her only problem. She couldn't mourn her husband who'd been attacked by a Cougar. He'd been so brutal on her wedding night that she refused to have relations with him. She realized after his death that there had been no love in her marriage. She'd married Jim out of loneliness. Her husband had been a great farmer, but love had never been a part of their marriage. After his frightful death she was advised to get some help with her crops or she would lose her property. Then her friend Dickens sent a man over to her that promised to get her crop in, and then he'd be leaving as he was a drifter. She'd have to make a decision soon as to staying or selling her place. Kate needed someone that would help her year round. But Wes Dolan had his own problems to solve. All the people he loved died on him, and Wes couldn't handle it, so he drifted. Kate and Wes got along great, and confided in each other. Wes advised her to find herself a husband. But Kate refused to marry someone that didn't love her again.
