Description

A “dangerously, darkly gorgeous fantasy” (Cassandra Clare), from New York Times bestselling author Holly Black.

Cassel comes from a family of curse workers—people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, all by the slightest touch of their hands. Since curse work is illegal, they’re all criminals. But not Cassel. He hasn’t got the magic touch, so he’s an outsider—the straight kid in a crooked family—as long as you ignore one small detail: He killed his best friend, Lila. Now he is sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat. He also notices that his brothers are keeping secrets from him. As Cassel begins to suspect he’s part of one huge con game, he must unravel his past and his memories. To find out the truth, Cassel will have to outcon the conmen.

Holly Black. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back because you, my friend, are awesome. I thought, a book from a male's point of view? I don't know... I find most authors can't write in another gender's voice convincingly. I take it back. White Cat and Libba Bray's Going Bovine have made me eat my words. If you're unsure about buying this book, do it.

The book was alluring and exciting. I was pleasantly surprised when I predicted many things wrongly. Many stories are pretty predictable -- not always a bad thing -- but it is fun to be kept guessing. It was refreshing to read a book that mixes magic, action and romance in a whole new way. The second book is just as fun. I can't wait for the third one. I plan to try Holly Black's Tithe while I wait for the third book to come out in April. Book recommendation: if you like this series, you might like Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series.

Fantastic book! Holly Black has created a deeply intriguing new world of the Curse Workers where a simple touch from an ungloved hand could do anything from bring luck to kill. Magic should always have consequences, and it certainly does here. This is one of those staying up past bedtime to find out who's conning whom books, and I absolutely loved it! Can't wait for the next one (due out April 5, 2011).
