  • Excellently creepy novella

A good 100-ish page story told in a way that I think works remarkably well in the horror genre. Not a particularly difficult read, and with a lot less of what I think to be the weaknesses of Lovecraft’s works. It’s clear why Lovecraft himself was a fan, and Machen’s work is one of the first that I found I genuinely had a hard time putting it down.

Very well written. I seldom read this type of literature yet I must admit I read it in one sitting. The writer did an extraordinary job of keeping the reader’s interest all the way to the end. Excellent story.
  • Wow. Strange and well executed.

It’s obvious why this story is so highly recommended. A work that transitions the genre of horror from gothic to weird fiction. Definitely leaves you with an overall creepy feeling to dwells within your thoughts well after you have read the last page.

Okay, so you need to read this in one sitting, with the lights off, and no distractions. If you do, I promise it will make sense, and you'll get sucked in the way I think Machen wanted readers to.
