This book is awful. Pacing is slow, the serial killer is not scary at all, the suspense is as gripping as an overcooked noodle, the sexual tension (usually Ms. Howard's strong suit) is non-existent and the characters are annoying. The hero, Dale, has a self-congratulatory tone for his supreme hetero-maleness, so much so I actually wonder if he was actually in the closet with every single overcompensating word on him.
As for Marlie, she was written so much to evoke sympathy that Ms. Howard pushed me the other way. I didn't feel sorry for her at all. She is cringe-worthy and an embarrassing caricature of a woman. When I read a description of her going catatonic during her psychic vision, I actually entertained the thought of Dale resting a coffee cup on her head for easy reach. It would have made an interesting scene at least and broken the tedium and torture I endured reading this drivel.
