Description

Jennifer L. Armentrout (also known as J. Lynn), New York Times bestselling author of the Wait for You saga, delivers a new novel of first love, second chances, and scorching chemistry.

Eleven months ago, bartender and weird-shirt-wearing extraordinaire Roxy and Officer Reece Anders had a one night stand. Well, kind of. She's been in love with him since she was fifteen, and he wishes that night they shared never happened. She's sworn him off forever, but the past and future collide, forcing her to rely on the one man who broke her heart not once, but twice.

Her best friend since birth has been in a long-term care facility since he became a victim of a hate crime years ago, and the person who put him in there is out of prison and wanting to make amends with him and Roxy. She's not sure she has room for forgiveness in her and when she begins to receive frightening messages and is on the receiving end of escalating violence, she thinks she knows who is to blame. The man who already destroyed one life already.

But Reece isn't convinced. The threats are too personal, and even if Roxy doesn't believe him, he's not willing to let anyone hurt her. Including himself. He's already messed up more than once when it comes to Roxy and he's not going to let history repeat itself.

I always thought being in Roxy's head would be a hoot, partially because of the awesome printed t-shirts she was always wore and the fact avoiding Reece or cursing at him is how she dealt with him. There was something there between them and I picked up on it in Stay With Me. I had no idea they'd had a moment in her seeming unrequited six year crush on him. I also had no idea her quips and smiles at the bar were hiding something so painful. Roxy was easy to like. She's feisty, smart, and talented. She loves deeply as is seen by her devotion and dedication to visit Charlie, her childhood best friend. The circumstances behind Charlie's current state were heartbreaking for everyone involved and painful to contemplate. I loved how the matter was treated and portrayed. The message that a simple act can have lasting consequences is one lesson that can be learned from this story, while another is how anger and hate never lead to peace and resolution. I understood Roxy's anger at what happened to Charlie and the fact Henry was out and free. Reece was easy to like too. He cared for Roxy, and her putting him off or cursing at him bothered him, especially since he didn't know why she was behaving in the manner she was. I liked how Reece forced her to deal with it head on once he'd had enough of waiting for her to tell him. Besides Reece, it was great to meet his family members and then some of Roxy's too. If I thought Roxy was a hoot, her mama was that times 10. I was also pleasantly surprised by the change in Nate in this book. He's really coming out of his shell. I also liked seeing characters from previous books doing well in this book. I dearly love the friends to lovers trope, but it wasn't able to make up for the romantic suspense aspect. It's not that it wasn't written well, it was, but I felt it was a little too predictable and I do love my plot twists. Over all the book was very enjoyable. The connection Roxy and Reece had was easy to pick up on and it was hot! I'm looking forward to reading more in this series and having my socks blown off. Another great story told and another hot guy from the group has been netted!
