Description

Now a Netflix Original Movie!

The Ritual is Adam Nevill's horror novel depicting a group of friends lost in a remote wilderness in Sweden where something supernatural lurks.

When four old University friends set off into the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle, they aim to briefly escape the problems of their lives and reconnect with one another. But when Luke, the only man still single and living a precarious existence, finds he has little left in common with his well-heeled friends, tensions rise. With limited experience between them, a shortcut meant to ease their hike turns into a nightmare scenario that could cost them their lives. Lost, hungry, and surrounded by forest untouched for millennia, Luke figures things couldn't possibly get any worse.

But then they stumble across an old habitation. Ancient artifacts decorate the walls and there are bones scattered upon the dry floors. The residue of old rites and pagan sacrifice for something that still exists in the forest. Something responsible for the bestial presence that follows their every step. As the four friends stagger in the direction of salvation, they learn that death doesn't come easy among these ancient trees . . .

  • Should have ended at part 1

Really liked the first ~70% of the book. The writing is captivating and the story keeps you on your toes. Really enjoyed the cadence and the truly eerie vibes. But after you finish part 1 you’re left expecting an exciting climax that never comes. The story flops and the author introduces unnecessary characters and storylines that not only take away from the thrill but also deviate from the original plot. Part 2 was entirely pointless and the book left me wishing for what could have been if the author had only ended at Part 1.

I’ve been looking for other horror writers other than Stephen King and found a fantastic one in Adam Nevill. After watching Netflix The Ritual I found out it was a book and had to read it. I found the book was so much better as they usually are. I would have loved to have seen the book ending in the film. It was that good. Five stars for sure. Now on to The Last Days.
  • A paragon of horror.

Brutal, descriptive, haunting. The writer demonstrates shining expertise in his craft as he weaves a riveting tale of isolation, paranoia, and fear. Please read this book immediately if you want a high-quality experience that will stay in your mind for years to come. (And then go watch the movie, because that’s awesome too!)

This good kept me on edge, and I really wanted to find out what was going to happen. I would have enjoyed the trials and tribulations of the main character more if they hadn't been so over the top. The terror was actually tedious at some points. More editing is needed to keep this story's edge. Less is more, as the architect Mies van der Roche said.

After finding this book on a list of the scariest books of the past one hundred years, expectations were high. It starts off very slowly, and drags for quite a while. One it does finally pique your interest, it fades off quickly and is back to dragging. The ending was a bit lackluster as well, as if the author couldn't quite muster a proper crescendo. It was very mechanical and devoid of creativity.
  • The best horror book I've read in years.

Adam Nevill is fantastic. Every book of his is spellbinding. I hope he proves to be a prolific writer because I can't seem to get enough of him. The Ritual is a masterpiece.

Ok, I liked this book for the most part. It felt a bit too long towards the end for me unfortunately, but i did love the pacing in the beginning and the closterphobic feel of it. But for me I felt it should have ended a hundred pages earlier. I also enjoyed the authors other book Last Days.
