#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE'S 100 BEST MYSTERY AND THRILLER BOOKS OF ALL TIME • Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Favorite book so far by Stephen King! The book was so much better than the movie in my opinion but I do think the movie did very good at picking the characters based on their descriptions and personalities in the book.

Enjoyed this read and comparing it to the Stanley Kubrick adaptation. I understand that things had to be changed to appeal and make sense in a movie. This story has so much more depth to it than the movie does and has me thinking so much about the roles and relationships between a father and son.

Steven King is not an author, he is a story teller, and he hit it out of the park with this book!

Having revered The Shining as one of my favorite horror films, I finally decided to read the source material for such a good but different film. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that this book was hundreds of times better than the movie. New layers of depth added to all characters and plot points. Being able to point at the ballroom scene in the book and compare it to the movie was a treat. It has so much more meaning in the book, and going back and watching the movie, it adds more depth to those scenes. A read that everyone should enjoy!!
