Not a bad plot but tough to get through…

The ideas behind the plot were decent—“nerdy” scientist and charming SEAL have been friends for years, and finally get together when he protects her from a threat. However, I really struggled to get through the book. The writing and conversations would go from stilted to seemingly from a soap opera and back again. The way the main characters spoke about their work made me think that the author didn’t do enough research into how people would actually discuss PTSD, pharmaceuticals, disease, etc. There were also times where Emilia’s character left me confused and not liking her. For example, on the first page of the book she seems to be someone who doesn’t think they are pretty and is a bit socially awkward. Within the next chapter, we see her flirting and caring about her makeup, highlighted hair, and fashion.. When she entered the work break room and saw it was messy, it didn’t do much for her character when she sat down and said she wasn’t going to be the one to clean up after others. While she was correct about cleaning not being her job, her petulance was unattractive.
