Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns with book one of the all-new, compelling Flesh and Fire seriesā€”set in the beloved Blood and Ash world.
Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierelā€™s future has never been hers. Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort.
However, Seraā€™s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasaniaā€”sheā€™s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one missionā€”one target. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and thenā€¦end him. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot.
Sera has always known what she is. Chosen. Consort. Assassin. Weapon. A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. A monster. Until him. Until the Primal of Deathā€™s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her. And his seductive touch ignites a passion sheā€™s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him. But Sera has never had a choice. Either way, her life is forfeitā€”it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death.

I wanted to love this book, but it was a bore. Armentrout has a hard time not revealing exposition through characters saying "I have a question šŸ¤“ā˜šŸ»" and the other characters saying "Of course you do... here's your answer". Poppy did it, and Sera does it as well. To be honest, Sera and Poppy are pretty much the same character - just different hair colors. The main story is dull and the only reason I continued to read is because I wanted to see the love arc unfold. Those are the only decent parts. Everything else feels skippable. ALSO - the use of modern slang absolutely ripped me out of the story. I would give it a 1 if it wasn't for Ash.

Skipped a lot of nonsense but the ending part was good and good lead up to the next series of blood and ash. I wish I read them in the correct order because blood and ash wouldā€™ve made more sense now

This is not my typical book but I couldnā€™t put it down. The detail, writing style, and story line is absolutely outstanding.

Interesting enough to keep reading. But I found myself skimming through this book.
  • So much more than romance

I canā€™t believe I found this book by scrolling through my tik tok feed! It was a scene from the mummy movie with Brendan Fraser, where his character is having an argument with his love interest, sorry I cannot remember her name, and she wonā€™t do what he tells her to do. He picks her up, throws her over his shoulder and carries her into the bedchamber. The caption read something like, ā€œif you like this, then checkout ā€˜A Shadow in the Emberā€™.ā€ Iā€™m a sucker for the at odds turns love interest type of stuff so I bought the first book and got hooked! The story is so much more than what you think. Sera is not just some damsel in distress. Sheā€™s a complex character, that Jennifer did a fantastic job creating. The story has romance of course but thereā€™s also action, humor, and heart wrenching moments. I canā€™t wait for book 4!

I am in love with Sera an Ash as much as I love Poppy and Cass. I was on the edge of my seat this whole book. The minute I finished I immediately bought the other two books an I canā€™t wait to dive in. I 1000% recommend this book and series.
