I don’t know if there is a better timed release of a book than WINTERING. It’s a book that I didn’t know I needed until I read it. This nonfiction book is part memoir, part essay, part philosophical investigation of winter and the times in our life of healing and rest. The book is constructed as a set of essays and personal stories following the calendar starting in late October and going through March, the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere. The author explores what winter means to various cultures and species, from Iceland and Finland to the dormouse and trees. She compares her own moments of “wintering” to those customs and cultures that endure long winters. From the Winter Solstice at Stonehenge to the Northern Lights to the ocean, this is as much a meditation on nature and the cycle of life. If you are having a tough time this winter, please take a look at this book. It’s a permission slip to treat you with care. Though the author deals with some injury and illness in this book, no one dies at the end. This isn’t a depressing read which I feared at the beginning. It’s uplifting and soothing and comforting. It was so good that when I was done I ordered several copies of the book and sent them to family members. The audiobook is fantastic too. ★★★★★ • 🎧 Audiobook • Nonfiction - Memoir, Essay • Published by Riverhead on November 10, 2020. ◾︎
