Description

This “authentic, generous, and heartfelt” (Mary Kay Andrews, New York Times bestselling author) instant New York Times bestseller from the author of The Summer of Lost and Found recounts one family’s summer of forging new beginnings against the enduring beauty and resilience of the natural world.

It’s been sixteen years since Caretta “Cara” Rutledge has returned home to the beautiful shores of Charleston, South Carolina. Over those years, she has weathered the tides of deaths and births, struggles and joys. And now, as Cara prepares for her second wedding, her life is about to change yet again.

Meanwhile, the rest of the storied Rutledge family is also in flux. Cara’s niece, Linnea, returns to Sullivan’s Island to begin a new career and an unexpected relationship. Linnea’s parents, having survived bankruptcy, pin their hopes and futures on the construction of a new home on Ocean Boulevard. But as excitement over the house and wedding builds, a devastating illness strikes the family and brings plans to a screeching halt. It is under these trying circumstances that the Rutledge family must come together yet again to discover the enduring strength in love, tradition, and legacy from mother to daughter to granddaughter.

“A heartwarming story of lowcountry love, loyalty, and longstanding friendships” (Booklist), On Ocean Boulevard is Mary Alice Monroe at her very best.

The book was well written. As a man I am constantly amazed and saddened by an authors apparent need to mix politics with a decent story. Too bad frankly. While I completely am in awe of the sea turtles voyage, commingling Enviromental concerns with such a lovely ritual is silly. “ Save the Environment “! Please check the data it’s as erroneous as the data that forced the closing of the country to the pandemic. Good story, cut the crap with the politics! It’s unnatural!

Having read the other books in the Beach House series, it was wonderful to revisit Primrose Cottage and see what everyone has been up to. Cara is engaged to her wonderful man David. Linnea is headed back home after living in California with John. The Turtle Team is still tracking and saving the sea turtle population in South Carolina. If you haven’t read any of this series, do not fret. You can pick up one book and follow along as well as starting at the beginning. Mary Alice Monroe is wonderful at weaving all the threads of the previous stories together. Yes, it’s nice to get to know everyone and their history, but there isn’t a burning need to do so. You will learn everything you need to know about where they’ve been. One of the nice things about these books is the time that Monroe takes to educate us about the issues with the sea turtle population. She also explains about preservation and what we can do to help. These glorious old creatures deserve a fighting chance to survive, and through education, we can save them. I like when a book weaves in current day issues, and in this case, actually lets us know how to make changes that can help. This will be a fabulous beach read, just in time for Memorial Day weekend. Personally, curling up with a summer read in the middle of winter works for me too. It’s nice to imagine the ocean breezes when there is snow on the ground. No matter when you pick this one up, it is going to be a book you will remember. 4.5 stars

In Monroe’s latest offering to readers, she adds one more gift to her much loved Beach House Series. There is something special about Monroe’s ability to continue her story about three generations of the Rutledge family, particularly the women. Her writing is authentic and heartfelt and draws readers in as she continues the stories of love, legacy, heartache, tradition, and resilience. These are the novels we read to enable us to reflect on our own families and how our different generations of women ”measure up”. I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Simon and Schuster and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
