Kami Garcia is an amazing author! I read her graphic novel Teen Titans Raven (which is also AMAZING btw) and I wanted to see more of her work. I came across this book, and WOW I was completely stunned, this book kept me reading for hours, I couldnā€™t put it down!!! The characters, the plot, the story, it was all put so beautifully, and itā€™s the kind of story that has you BEGGING for more! So if you havenā€™t read this book, GO DO IT!!!!šŸ’–

This book caught my eye because I am a soccer player and the girl in the book is a soccer player. But turns out it is so much more than that. The love story tugged on my heart to the point where in the last 30 pages I was pacing back and forth through my living room. This book was exceptional and i recommend it to teens and up.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of the book. Iā€™m beginning to realize I might need to adjust my stance on YA contemporaries.... Broken Beautiful Hearts is that good! I loved Peyton and her ENTIRE FAMILY, Owen was fantastic, the setting was superb and the plot was riveting. This book deftly dealt with really difficult topics in a timely manner that was so respectful to the audience - it did not talk down, demean, belittle, or preach. It was gritty, real, and honest. This made perfect sense after reading the author's note alluding to her personal history with some of the topic matters and I'm glad that she included that. I loved this sense of family highlighted in the book, I loved Peyton's fierce independence (as well as her growing maturity as she learned there is no weakness in accepting help), I loved the different nuances and intricacies in EACH relationship. And even I loved the plot twist that almost made me drop my kindle (and shattered my poor little heart too). I'm a little jaded when it comes to Young Adult contemporaries, but now I'm convinced I must give the genre another try - starting with Kami Garcia's The Lovely Reckless. Broken Beautiful Hearts is absolutely outstanding. 5 out of 5 wine glasses.
  • A Wonderful Romance

First Thoughts I wasn't sure how up my alley Broken Beautiful Hearts would be initially, but I've loved Kami's other books, so I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did, because I really enjoyed it! I played soccer when I was younger, and I still love the sport, so I was really excited to learn that the main character played. Characters The main character is Peyton Rios, high school senior and star soccer player. I really liked and related to her as a character. Sometimes, I feel like I just want to yell at a character until they do the right thing. What made this great, is Peyton often took a solid course of action, but things would still go wrong. It's a sign of good storytelling when a character can do everything right and still get screwed over. If I knew Peyton in real life, I have a feeling we'd be friends and get along really well. World Building Most of the book takes place in two locations, Washington DC and Black Water, Tennessee. The descriptions of Black Water felt very realistic to a southern small town. DC on the other hand felt off. I lived there when I was younger, and have family who still lives there. The main thing is that the character can just drive anywhere she wants, no mention of traffic. Characters can't just drive anywhere they want in a decent amount of time. That said, the Black Water description felt pretty well done.

Broken Beautiful Hearts *received an arc in exchange for an honest review** 5 āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø A great book that you wonā€™t want to put down. Two people will be faced with losing their dreams and what are they going to do to make sure they donā€™t lose each other. They will be faced with challenges and have to find strength in not only each other but themselves. Kami Garcia weaves a heartwarming story that will have you wanting more. Peyton was on her way to her dream school playing soccer, but after a fateful night where her boyfriend pushes her down the stairs and wrecks her knee, her dream is slipping through her fingers. The worse part is no one except her mother believes her and Reed wonā€™t leave her alone. Her mom decides to send her to her uncleā€™s to continue PT until things die down. On her first day there she meets Owen who even though they donā€™t say much to each other she can already feel a connection. When she finds out that Owen is an kickboxer/MMA fighter and will be helping her with her PT she knows it could change things. As she grows closer to Owen they canā€™t deny their feelings but as time goes on they both find out that they are hiding things from each other. Will they be able to help each other and their own dreams? Or will Peyton once again lose someone she loves because they wonā€™t take care of themselves?

Another YA book that I loved!!! Again, I donā€™t really do the YA books, but between this book and another YA Book, Iā€™m might be a convert... at least for Kami Garciaā€™s Books!!! I really like a book where one of the characters has some sort of injury or malady. So this as perfect! This story had a little bit of everything. There was romance, suspense and sweetness. Definitely a YA author I will read again!
